Airfront November 16

Airfront Logo

“Airfront” is the new business that I’m in the process of setting up. I’m currently contracted to the BBC in Manchester where I’ working as a Client-side Developer, which is more commonly known as a “front-end developer”.

I’ve been working for the BBC for over two years and it can be really interesting, bringing with it many challenges and rewards not seen as a freelancer in the indie scene. Its different working for the BBC because its fully audience focused which is not always the case when working on commercial projects.

Simply because its for the BBC your work tends to be held to a higher standard (ssssh! don't say it. I know what you're thinking some of us inside think it too). The BBC has a strict set of Standards & Guidelines, many of the technologies and users that our industry has been leaving behind cannot be ignored by the BBC, so just by working for them you are unable to conveniently write off troublesome or minority browsers and platforms.

However I’m only contracted until next year and still have existing, albeit small, clients from before my time at the BBC, so I thought it was about time I formalised my company even if it doesn’t start operating properly until they day comes for me to part company with the BBC.

Its taken me months to come up with the Airfront name. I researched names that I liked and invariably the ones I really loved were already taken. I eventually settled on Airfront because I like the word air, the images it conjures up and its associated words/themes, its also a popular word in software and digital circles recently with Adobe AIR for example. The “front” is tacked on the end as front-end development is the service I’ll offer.

As a coincidence I noticed that its very similar to a well respected creative agency named Airside, I hope they don’t mind. I respect their work immensely and aim to be regarded as highly as they are within my own particular discipline.

After much struggle I’ve settled on the above logo design. I lost count of how many times I changed it, being happy with something for a few weeks only to second guess myself having seen something similar or the typeface being overused or just having starred at it for too long.

The site is currently being designed and built as should be online after Christmas. I will update here with the company’s and site’s progress if only as a mechanism for helping myself rationalise the choices I’m making.

This picture is quite shocking really - click to reveal.

Candy! November 8

The recent focus on the U.S spurred me to buy some American treats that can't be found in the shops of rainy Manchester. Yum! If you want to get some for yourself I had a great experience with American Soda.
